NRL 2008 – Round 1

Well, the centenary season of Australia’s rugby league competition commences tomorrow night with traditional foes South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters squaring off at ANZ Stadium (no, not the one that used to be Brisbane’s home ground, but the former Telstra Stadium). It’s going to be an enthralling year of rugby league, I reckon.

I thought it might be a good exercise in bold tipping to present my tips each Thursday night and keep a tally of them, since I’m not sure whether Steve will be creating a comp this season through the Footytips site like previous years. What follows are my carefully (to a degree) selected tips for this weekend, pasted directly from Footytips.

I’ve gone and boldly predicted some upsets in the form of Gold Coast christening their new home ground in Robina with a win over North Queensland (if Johnathan Thurston is cleared to play I may be changing my tip though), and Canberra continuing their surprise form with a win over a Newcastle side that I doubt will do much better than last year, even if Danny Buderus’ move to Leeds next year serves as a motivational tool.

Of course, the return of NRL means the return of 2GB’s greatest quartet, the Continuous Call Team. Tune to 873 at 7pm tomorrow to hear Ray, Blockie and The Big Marn bring their slightly irreverent, yet always entertaining, edge to footy commentary, then Weekend Detention from midday on Saturday and Sunday, where Bob Fulton will once again resume his Vice-Captain duties.
