Super 14 rugby commences…

And the ACT Brumbies look set for a very long and painful season after a 34-3 mauling at the hands of the Crusaders. Summary here.

One could say that it bodes well for the Wallabies, given that Crusaders coach Robbie Deans will take over the Wallabies role later this year, but unless the Reds, Waratahs and Force can show some early season ticker (and I think the Tahs can make the semis with the help of Timana Tahu, and if Lote Tuqiri is played in a useful position), this could be a dire year for provincial rugby.

That said, the Reds beat the Highlanders by 22-16 at Suncorp Stadium in what seems to have been a less than commanding display.
