Internet radio is great!

I’m on holidays in Port Macquarie and thanks to a nice fast wireless network in the complex I’m staying, I’m able to listen to my favourite radio talkback shows in crisp static free quality so I’m a little bit less homesick than I could be. If I had a fast enough connection at home I’d utilise it more often and not have to worry about dodgy radio reception.

The Tata Nano

The Indian car manufacturer (and new owners of Jaguar) Tata have unveiled a car that costs just $2500US.

Sure, it’s probably suited to a country where roads are crowded and motorcycles can often be seen to have many more occupants than should be on them. But it just looks…well, puzzling. Surely (even though I can’t imagine it would ever be able to get to a reasonably brisk speed) with those wheelbarrow tyres and a rather squat design, it would leave the occupants at great risk in a traffic accident of even minor proportions. I for one wouldn’t hope to see it on roads where travel is reasonably brisk. With safety features at the cutting edge of technology of a couple of generations ago, it seems that to get the cost affordable, corners have been cut.

I’ll be interested to see what becomes of this rollerskate…erm…car.

Ugly guitars

As a keen guitarist, I can’t help but cringe at some of the stringed instruments featured here. A couple may be shaped in a manner that is slightly offensive to some viewers.

I <3 Golf

On New Years Day, almost a year after I won a set of golf clubs on eBay for my birthday, I played my first round of golf around the Grose River Golf Course near Richmond. It really is a lovely little 9 hole layout, and naturally, having never ventured onto a course for lack of time, I found it challenging, but brought a score of 51 for the first time around down to 42 the second time around (it’s a par 35). Last Saturday I went back and shot 41 (with about 4 putts lipping the edge of the hole, so it could have been better).

Mark Twain (supposedly) famously said that golf is a good walk spoiled. It’s only spoiled if you get too frustrated at your own game and play patiently, not losing too many balls in the process. Of course I’m not playing golf with the aim of making the PGA Tour, but I do want to improve my fledgling game. In 2008 I want to try and get a round in per week at any golf course that I can get a game at. So far it’s on track! 🙂

A lack of unity reflects what we believe about the Gospel…(a finished work some 4 months after the start)

I found this unfinished from ages ago, and considering the path I’ve gone through this past few months, I thought I might as well finish it. (I got up to the word “business”. Plus I’ve decided I need to blog more, since my mind has indeed started to more often reflect the mood that I have given as the title of the blog.

So said Steve in his sermon this evening. I’ve had the chance to reflect on this a little bit, especially on the level of one on one friendship.

Friendship can be a fickle business. As Paul McCartney sang in one of the great songs of all time “Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh I believe in yesterday”. It’s taken on a new meaning for me since one of my most treasured relationships collapsed over issues that I shan’t comment about.

Let me say that this is no means for me to muckrake or seek revenge. It is merely a simple statement of my belief that true friendship cannot remain permanently severed by times of injustice or wrong. Friendship is nothing if one seeks to dictate the interaction between 2 people on their own terms. I remember a song from Sesame Street that had the lyrics “Cooperation makes it happen. Cooperation – working together”. This is a profound phrase – it so clearly demonstrates what the good comes from any sort of friendship where one does not seek to maintain fairness, equality and the like.

I long for this broken relationship to be restored – sure, it probably won’t be to the extent it once was, but to preserve a godly aspect on the simple agape love that people should share for each other, I long for it to happen sooner rather than later. Only the will of God will tell.
