Independent petrol stations fight back

Kudos to Eliah el Khoury of the independent petrol station chain Speedway for taking the fight to the big service station chains and offering petrol at just $1 a litre for an hour this afternoon. I hope that it’ll provoke consumers to realise that even with the shopping docket discounts of the bigger providers, it’s not really that much of a saving overall, and the independents deserve a fair go. I’ll often fill up at independents when I can, and find that the prices are often competitive, if not cheaper, than Caltex, Shell, Mobil, et al.

In an age where the profit hungry big names of retail are (whether it’s intentional or not) flooding their markets and taking customers away from the hardworking battlers trying to make a living, such stories are encouraging. And plenty of motorists are bound to be happy to have scooped up a bargain. I just hope that they return a second time, even when the prices are at their normal rates.
